About

Rowan Sebastian Atkinson, born on January 6, 1955, in Consett, County Durham, UK, to Ella May (Bainbridge) and Eric Atkinson, grew up on his father’s farm alongside his two older brothers. He pursued higher education at Newcastle University and Oxford University, earning degrees in electrical engineering. During his time at Oxford, he encountered screenwriter Richard Curtis, initiating a long-standing collaboration through comedy revues that laid the groundwork for his future career in entertainment. His early work included co-writing and appearing in “Not the Nine O’Clock News” (1979), a program that garnered significant acclaim, winning an International Emmy Award and a British Academy Award for “Best Light Entertainment Programme of 1980.” His performance also earned him the “BBC Personality of the Year” award.

Atkinson’s career saw a significant turning point with his portrayal of Mr. Bean, first appearing in the TV series “Mr. Bean” (1990). This character gained international recognition for its unique brand of physical comedy, leading to feature films like “Bean” (1997) and “Mr. Bean’s Holiday” (2007), as well as an animated series “Mr. Bean: The Animated Series” (2002–present). Concurrently, Atkinson took on the lead role of Edmund Blackadder in the BBC mock-historical comedy series “Blackadder” (1983–1989), which evolved into one of the most successful BBC situation comedies. These roles, alongside his appearances in films such as “Never Say Never Again” (1983), “The Lion King” (1994, as the voice of Zazu), and the “Johnny English” film series, cemented his status as a prominent figure in British comedy and beyond.

Throughout his career, Atkinson has maintained a presence across various mediums, including theatre, where he played Fagin in the West End revival of “Oliver!” (2009). His contributions to drama and charity were recognized with a CBE in the 2013 Birthday Honours. He also notably appeared in the 2012 Summer Olympics opening ceremony as Mr. Bean. His enduring characters and diverse body of work continue to resonate with global audiences, reflecting his unique comedic style that often blends verbal wit with distinctive physical performance.
