Rúben dos Santos Gato Alves Dias was born on May 14, 1997, in Amadora, Portugal. He began his football journey at local club Estrela da Amadora, initially playing as a striker before transitioning to defense. In 2008, he joined Benfica’s youth academy, where he continued to develop as a center-back. Dias made his professional debut with Benfica B in the 2015–16 LigaPro season. His consistent performances led to his promotion to the Benfica first team in 2017. During his time at Benfica, he quickly established himself, earning the Primeira Liga’s Young Player of the Year award in the 2017–18 season and helping the team secure the league title in 2018–19, as well as the Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira in 2019. He concluded his Benfica career with over 100 appearances before moving to England.
In September 2020, Dias transferred to Premier League club Manchester City for a reported fee of €68 million. His arrival significantly bolstered Manchester City’s defense, contributing to them regaining the Premier League title in his debut 2020–21 season, alongside an EFL Cup win and a UEFA Champions League final appearance.
