Rudeboy, also known as Paul Okoye, has established himself as a prominent figure in the Nigerian music industry, known for his songwriting and vocal contributions both as a solo artist and formerly as part of the globally recognized duo, P-Square.
African Superstars Peter and Paul Okoye (P-Square) were named Global Brand Ambassadors for the international jewelry brand Moijey Fine Jewelry & Diamonds.
Paul Okoye, professionally known as Rudeboy, was born on November 18, 1981, in Jos, Nigeria. His musical journey began at St. Murumba secondary school in Jos, where he, alongside his identical twin brother Peter, participated in the school’s music and drama club. During this period, they performed covers of artists such as MC Hammer, Bobby Brown, and Michael Jackson, developing their stage presence and musical skills. Rudeboy rose to prominence in the 2000s as one half of the acclaimed music duo P-Square. He was recognized as the creative force behind the group’s sound, responsible for songwriting and a significant portion of the recording process. P-Square released their debut album, “Last Nite,” in 2003, marking the beginning of a successful career that garnered them a wide international fanbase with hits that resonated across various demographics.
Following the disbandment of P-Square in 2017, Rudeboy embarked on a solo career, demonstrating his individual artistic capabilities. He released his debut solo tracks, ‘Fire Fire’ and ‘Nkenji Keke,’ in the same year. A significant milestone in his solo career was the release of ‘Reason With Me’ in 2019, which became the most-viewed African video on YouTube for that year and currently boasts over 189 million views. This success provided him with renewed confidence, leading him to found his own record label, Fire Department Inc, in 2019. In 2021, he released his debut solo album, “Rudykillus,” further cementing his position as an independent artist.
Rudeboy’s dedication to his craft extends beyond music creation. He has adapted to the challenges of a solo career, learning the intricacies of marketing and media relations, areas he previously delegated within the group. His ability to connect with audiences globally, particularly in African and Caribbean regions, is attributed to the distinct melodious quality of his voice. He has successfully transitioned from performing in smaller venues to headlining stadiums, a testament to his musical appeal and resilience. His work often explores themes of love, money, and family, reflecting his belief in music as a medium for conveying relatable experiences and imparting knowledge.
