Rufus Sewell

Rufus Frederik Sewell was born in Twickenham, England, on October 29, 1967. His mother, Jo, was a Welsh artist and classically trained pianist, and his father, Bill Sewell, was an English-Australian animator known for his work on The Beatles’ ‘Yellow Submarine’ film. After his parents divorced when he was five, his father passed away when Rufus was ten. He attended Orleans Park School and West Thames College before enrolling at the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London, completing his training in June 1989. Early in his career, Judi Dench connected him with an agent. Sewell quickly established himself on the London stage, earning the “Best Newcomer Award” for his debut in “Making It Better.” He also originated the role of Septimus Hodge in Tom Stoppard’s play “Arcadia” in 1993, which led to an Olivier Award nomination. His Broadway debut in “Translations” garnered him the Broadway Theater World Award, showcasing his talent for both stage and screen from the outset of his career.

Sewell’s film career began with varied roles, including a junkie in “Twenty-One” (1991), a bus driver in “A Man of No Importance” (1994), and an artist in “Carrington” (1995). His portrayal of John Murdoch in the science fiction film “Dark City” (1998) was a significant milestone, followed by prominent roles in “A Knight’s Tale” (2001) as Count Adhemar and “The Illusionist” (2006) as Crown Prince Leopold, often taking on antagonistic characters. On television, he gained recognition for his work in the BBC adaptation of George Eliot’s “Middlemarch” (1994), and later for his critically acclaimed portrayal of Charles II in “Charles II: The Power and the Passion” (2003). He also starred as Dr. Jacob Hood in the CBS series “Eleventh Hour” (2008–2009) and as John Smith in the Amazon series “The Man in the High Castle” (2015–2019).

Notably, Sewell received an Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Play for his role as Jan in Tom Stoppard’s “Rock ‘n’ Roll” (2006), a performance that also earned him a Tony Award nomination. His filmography also includes “Judy” (2019) where he played Sid Luft, and “The Father” (2020) as Paul, both receiving critical recognition. More recently, he starred as Hal Wyler in the Netflix series “The Diplomat” (2023–present), continuing to demonstrate his extensive range across different genres and platforms. Sewell’s career reflects a consistent commitment to diverse and challenging roles in film, television, and theatre.
