Russ Cook

Russell Cook, born on March 13, 1997, in Worthing, West Sussex, has established himself as an endurance athlete known for undertaking extreme running challenges. He attended Vale school, Worthing High School, and Worthing College. In 2019, Cook demonstrated early indications of his endurance capabilities by running from Istanbul, Turkey, to Worthing, England, a distance of approximately 2,900 km, entirely unsupported over 68 days. His early career also saw him set a world record in 2020 for the fastest marathon while pulling a car, completing it in 9 hours and 56 minutes. These feats showcased a consistent pattern of pushing physical and mental boundaries through demanding endurance activities.

Cook’s career reached a notable milestone with ‘Project Africa,’ a monumental undertaking where he successfully ran the entire length of the African continent. This challenge started on April 22, 2023, from Cape Agulhas, South Africa, and concluded on April 7, 2024, in Cape Angela, Tunisia. Over 352 days, he traversed approximately 16,400 km across 16 countries. This expedition was not without significant obstacles; Cook faced armed robbery, health issues including severe back pain requiring medical attention in Nigeria, food poisoning, and critical visa complications that threatened to halt the entire project. Despite these setbacks and even being separated from his support crew and held in a hut in the Democratic Republic of Congo, he persevered, demonstrating resilience in extreme environments. His efforts gained widespread media attention, including an appeal for an Algerian visa that caught the attention of Elon Musk and the Home Office, ultimately allowing him to complete his journey.

Beyond personal achievement, Project Africa served as a fundraising initiative, surpassing its £1,000,000 goal for The Running Charity and Sandblast, two organizations focused on mental health and supporting the Saharawi population, respectively. Cook undertook this challenge partly due to his past struggles with mental health, gambling addiction, and alcoholism, aiming to inspire others and make a positive impact. His commitment to these causes and his capacity for extreme endurance mark him as a figure who combines athletic prowess with a dedication to social impact. Following his African run, Cook continued his ambitious projects by running to every England game during the UEFA Euro 2024 tournament, sponsored by Sports Direct and Score Draw, further solidifying his reputation as a prominent endurance athlete.
