Russell Gage Jr. was born on January 22, 1996, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He attended Redemptorist High School before playing college football at LSU from 2014 to 2017. During his initial seasons at LSU, Gage played as a defensive back. A notable turning point in his college career occurred in Week 7 of his junior year when he transitioned to offense, contributing significantly to a victory over #22 Texas A&M with five receptions for 62 yards and a touchdown.
Gage’s professional career began when he was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the sixth round, 194th overall, in the 2018 NFL Draft. In his rookie year, he recorded six receptions for 63 yards across 15 games. His performance steadily improved, and in the 2019 season, he secured his first professional receiving touchdown against the New Orleans Saints, concluding the year with 49 receptions for 446 yards. The 2020 season marked a significant milestone as he became the Falcons’ second-leading receiver, achieving 72 receptions, 786 receiving yards, and four touchdowns, including a career-high 114 receiving yards against the Seattle Seahawks.
In 2022, Gage signed a three-year, $30 million contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. With the Buccaneers, he recorded a career-best 12 receptions in a single game and his first multi-touchdown game, finishing the season with 51 receptions, 426 receiving yards, and five touchdowns across 13 games. He later signed with the Baltimore Ravens in 2024 and then joined the San Francisco 49ers’ practice squad in November 2024, subsequently signing a reserve/future contract in January 2025.
