Ruud Gullit, born Rudi Dil on September 1, 1962, in Amsterdam, Netherlands, developed his football skills playing street football in his early years. He began his youth career at Meer Boys Amsterdam from 1973 to 1975, then moved to DWS Amsterdam from 1975 to 1978, and subsequently joined HFC Haarlem in 1978. Gullit made his professional debut with HFC Haarlem at just 16 years old, becoming the youngest player in Eredivisie history at the time. After leading Haarlem to the Eerste Divisie title in the 1980-81 season and a fourth-place finish in the Eredivisie in 1981-82, he was recognized as the best player in the Eerste Divisie. He progressed to Feyenoord in 1982, where he played a crucial role alongside Johan Cruyff in securing the league and cup double in the 1983-84 season, earning him the Dutch Footballer of the Year award.
In 1985, Gullit joined PSV Eindhoven, winning back-to-back Eredivisie titles in 1985-86 and 1986-87, and was again named Dutch Footballer of the Year in 1986. His performances led to a world-record transfer to AC Milan in 1987. At AC Milan, he became part of a famous Dutch trio, winning three Serie A titles (1987-88, 1991-92, 1992-93) and two European Cups (1988-89, 1989-90). He won the Ballon d’Or in 1987, dedicating it to Nelson Mandela, and was named World Soccer Player of the Year in 1987 and 1989. Following stints with Sampdoria, where he won the Coppa Italia in 1993-94, Gullit moved to Chelsea in 1995. He transitioned to player-manager a year later, leading Chelsea to their first major trophy in 26 years, the FA Cup, in 1997.
After his managerial tenure at Chelsea concluded in 1998, Gullit went on to manage Newcastle United (1998-1999), Feyenoord (2004-2005), LA Galaxy (2007-2008), and Terek Grozny (2011). On the international stage, Gullit captained the Netherlands national team to victory at the UEFA Euro 1988, scoring in the final and becoming the first Dutch captain to lift a major international trophy. He was also a member of the squads for the 1990 FIFA World Cup and Euro 1992. His career has been marked by versatility, athleticism, technique, and leadership. Gullit was named one of the Top 125 greatest living footballers in FIFA’s 100th-anniversary celebration in 2004.
