Mario Williams

Mario Williams was born on January 31, 1985, in Richlands, North Carolina. He attended Richlands High School, where he excelled in both football and track. As a senior, he recorded 87 tackles, 13 sacks, 22 tackles for loss, five forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and five blocked kicks. He also played running back, rushing for 590 yards and three touchdowns. His high school number (82) was retired. Williams continued his football career at North Carolina State University, playing for the NC State Wolfpack from 2003 to 2005. In just three seasons, he set the school’s all-time sack record, a testament to his impact at the collegiate level.

Williams was selected first overall by the Houston Texans in the 2006 NFL Draft, a significant career milestone. He quickly made an impact, starting all 16 games in his rookie season. His performance improved consistently, earning him his first Pro Bowl selection in 2008 and first-team All-Pro honors twice, in 2008 and 2014. After six seasons with the Texans, during which he became the franchise’s second all-time leader in career sacks and forced fumbles, he signed a six-year, $100 million contract with the Buffalo Bills in 2012. This contract made it the most lucrative for a defensive player in NFL history at the time. With the Bills, he continued his high-level performance, achieving a career-high 14.5 sacks in the 2014 season.

Following his time with the Bills, Williams signed with the Miami Dolphins in 2016. He played one season before his release in February 2017. Throughout his career, Williams was recognized for his consistent play and leadership as a defensive end. Beyond his professional achievements, he engaged in community efforts, including donating Chevrolet Camaros and Dodge Chargers to the Houston Police Department and launching a breakfast cereal, “MariO’s,” to benefit children’s cancer charities in Buffalo.
