About

Samuel Leroy Jackson was born on December 21, 1948, in Washington, D.C., and was raised by his mother and maternal grandparents in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, initially pursuing marine biology before switching to drama after discovering an interest in acting through a public speaking class and a local acting group. During his time at Morehouse, he co-founded the Just Us Theatre. Following Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination in 1968, Jackson became involved in the black student movement, which included participating in a protest at Morehouse College that led to his suspension for two years. He returned to graduate in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts in drama. His early career involved stage acting in New York City, including roles in “Home” and “A Soldier’s Play,” and minor film appearances, such as his feature film debut in “Together for Days” (1972). During this period, he struggled with alcohol and cocaine addiction, which he successfully addressed with rehabilitation.

Jackson’s career began gaining momentum in the late 1980s and early 1990s through collaborations with director Spike Lee, appearing in films like “School Daze” (1988), “Do the Right Thing” (1989), “Mo’ Better Blues” (1990), and earning critical acclaim for his role as a crack cocaine addict in “Jungle Fever” (1991), which earned him a special “Supporting Actor” award at the 1991 Cannes Film Festival. This period also saw him in films such as “Patriot Games” (1992), “Amos & Andrew” (1993), and “Jurassic Park” (1993). His breakthrough came in 1994 with Quentin Tarantino’s “Pulp Fiction,” where his portrayal of Jules Winnfield earned him a BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor and an Oscar nomination, cementing his status as an internationally recognized actor. The success of “Pulp Fiction” led to a string of box-office hits, including “Die Hard with a Vengeance” (1995) and “A Time to Kill” (1996), for which he received a Golden Globe nomination.

Throughout the late 1990s and 2000s, Jackson continued to build an extensive filmography, portraying iconic characters like Mace Windu in the “Star Wars” prequel trilogy (1999–2005) and Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (beginning with “Iron Man” in 2008), a role for which he signed a nine-film commitment. He has lent his distinctive voice to animated films such as “The Incredibles” (2004) and video games like “Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas” (2004). His versatility is evident in his diverse roles, ranging from action heroes and villains to dramatic characters in films like “Snakes on a Plane” (2006) and “Django Unchained” (2012). Recognized as one of the highest-grossing actors of all time, he received an Academy Honorary Award in 2022, celebrated as a cultural icon whose work has transcended genres and generations.
