Nolan North was born on October 31, 1970, in New Haven, Connecticut. He was raised in Warwick, Rhode Island, and attended Bishop Hendricken High School, where he played baseball. He later majored in journalism at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill on a baseball scholarship. Following a year as a reporter in New Jersey, North moved to New York City to pursue a career in stand-up comedy and acting. His acting journey led him to Los Angeles, where he secured his breakthrough role as Dr. Chris Ramsey in the ABC soap opera “Port Charles” from 1997 until its conclusion in 2003. This period also saw his initial foray into voice acting for video games, a path he subsequently focused on after “Port Charles” ended.
North’s career in voice acting significantly expanded, leading to numerous iconic roles. He is widely recognized for voicing and performing motion capture for Nathan Drake in the “Uncharted” video game series, beginning with “Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune” in 2007. He reprised this role in subsequent titles, including “Uncharted 2: Among Thieves” (2009), “Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception” (2011), “Uncharted: Golden Abyss” (2012), and “Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End” (2016). His versatility is evident in other prominent video game characters such as Desmond Miles in the “Assassin’s Creed” series, Dr. Edward Richtofen in the “Call of Duty” franchise, Deadpool in various Marvel media, and the Penguin in the “Batman: Arkham” franchise. Notably, he also took over the voice of Ghost in the “Destiny” video game series, re-recording previous lines and continuing in the role, and later assumed the role of Cayde-6 in “Destiny 2: Forsaken” (2018).
Beyond video games, North has a substantial presence in animation, voicing characters like Smokescreen in “Transformers: Prime,” Superboy in “Young Justice,” and the titular character in “Blaze and the Monster Machines” since 2014. In 2013, he made a live-action appearance in “Star Trek Into Darkness,” a role secured due to director J. J. Abrams’ appreciation for his work as Nathan Drake. In 2018, North received a Special Award from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts for his outstanding contribution to performance in games. He also co-hosted the YouTube series “Retro Replay” starting in 2018, providing behind-the-scenes insights into game development. His voice acting extended to narrating the audiobook for the 2022 “Uncharted” film adaptation, and he appeared as Gene Campbell in the 2024 Peacock television series “Hysteria!”.
