After winning the European Amateur Championship in 2012, Scott Donaldson began his professional snooker career, securing a coveted two-year tour card for the 2012–13 and 2013–14 snooker seasons. In his debut professional year, he competed in ten Players Tour Championship events, achieving a notable last 32 finish at European Tour Event 1 and concluding the season ranked world number 89. The following season proved to be another step forward for Donaldson, as he qualified for the 2013 Wuxi Classic, progressing to the last 16.
