Sean Maher

Born on April 16, 1975, in Pleasantville, New York, Sean Maher pursued his passion for acting by attending the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. His early career saw him take on the title role in the FOX drama *Ryan Caulfield: Year One*. Although the series had a brief run, Maher’s performance garnered positive attention and led to a holding deal with FOX. This period included work on the series *Party of Five* and Darren Star’s *The $treet*, where he portrayed a former Navy SEAL turned Wall Street trader.

Maher is widely known for his portrayal of Dr. Simon Tam in Joss Whedon’s critically acclaimed series *Firefly* (2002-2003) and its feature film continuation, *Serenity* (2005). Following the birth of his daughter in 2007, Maher took a hiatus from acting to focus on family. He returned to television with guest roles in series such as *The Mentalist*, *Human Target*, and *Warehouse 13*. A notable career point occurred in 2011 while cast as a closeted gay man, Sean Beasely, in *The Playboy Club*. Maher used this role as a platform to publicly come out as a gay man. This decision was covered by Entertainment Weekly and is considered a significant personal and professional achievement.

Further career highlights include his portrayal of Don John in Joss Whedon’s feature film adaptation of Shakespeare’s *Much Ado About Nothing* (2012) and recurring as Mark Scheffer (Shrapnel) in The CW’s *Arrow* (2013-2014). Maher has also established himself in voice acting, most notably as Nightwing/Dick Grayson in the Warner Bros./DC Comics animated universe, appearing in films such as *Son of Batman* (2014), *Justice League vs. Teen Titans* (2016), *Batman: Bad Blood* (2016), and *Teen Titans: The Judas Contract* (2017).
