Born on January 26, 1990, in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, Sergio Michel Pérez Mendoza, known as “Checo,” embarked on his racing journey at the age of six in karting. He quickly demonstrated natural talent, securing his first national championship in karting and later winning the national class of the 2007 British Formula 3 International Series. His formative years in junior categories, including the GP2 Series where he finished runner-up in 2010, paved the way for his Formula One debut.
Pérez officially entered Formula One in 2011 with Sauber, supported by sponsor Telmex. His rookie season showcased his potential, particularly with an impressive one-stop strategy at the 2011 Australian Grand Prix, though the team was later disqualified. The 2012 season saw him achieve his first three podium finishes in Malaysia, Canada, and Italy, cementing his reputation as a formidable talent. This success led to a move to McLaren for the 2013 season, followed by a long and impactful tenure with Force India, which later became Racing Point. During this period, he consistently delivered strong performances, securing multiple podiums and his maiden Grand Prix victory at the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix. His consistent results and strategic insights earned him a place at Red Bull Racing from 2021 to 2024.
At Red Bull, Pérez played a crucial supporting role to teammate Max Verstappen, contributing to World Constructors’ Championships and achieving further notable victories, including the 2021 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, and two wins each in the 2022 and 2023 seasons. He secured his first pole position in Saudi Arabia in 2022, and finished as runner-up in the 2023 World Drivers’ Championship, marking his highest career finish. After concluding his partnership with Red Bull at the end of the 2024 season, Pérez is set to embrace a new challenge, joining the Cadillac Formula 1 Team for their inaugural season in 2026, aiming to help build the team’s culture and establish it as a competitive force.
