To try to get back to that level, Betances enlisted the help of Rockland Peak Performance (RPP), a biomechanics-focused baseball training company.
Dellin Betances was born on March 23, 1988, in Washington Heights, Manhattan. His parents, Jaime and Maria, immigrated from the Dominican Republic. Growing up on the Lower East Side of New York City and attending high school in Brooklyn, Betances initially played basketball but chose baseball, influenced by family trips to New York Yankees games. By his junior year of high school in 2005, Betances was throwing a fastball at 90 miles per hour and was named an Aflac All-American, the first player from New York City to receive this honor. He also played for the Team USA Junior National Team. He committed to Vanderbilt University but later signed with the New York Yankees after being drafted in the eighth round of the 2006 MLB draft, receiving a $1 million signing bonus.
Betances began his professional career in the Yankees’ minor league system, spending time with the Staten Island Yankees, Charleston RiverDogs, and Tampa Yankees. He faced setbacks with injuries, including elbow inflammation in 2009. However, he gradually progressed, making his Major League debut with the New York Yankees on September 22, 2011. While initially a starting pitcher in the minor leagues, he transitioned to a relief role in 2013, a turning point that led to significant success. This move to the bullpen allowed him to harness his pitching strength, focusing on a powerful four-seam fastball and a slurve, which contributed to his high strikeout rates.
From 2014 to 2017, Betances was an MLB All-Star, marking four consecutive selections, a rare achievement for a reliever. In 2014, he set a Yankees team record for strikeouts by a relief pitcher, surpassing Mariano Rivera. He became known as a dominant force in the bullpen, particularly as part of the “No Runs–D.M.C.” triumvirate with Aroldis Chapman and Andrew Miller in 2016. He distinguished himself as the only reliever in MLB history to record at least 100 strikeouts in five consecutive seasons (2014-2018). After his impactful tenure with the Yankees, Betances signed with the New York Mets in 2019, played briefly, and later signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers organization before retiring in 2022.
