Shelby Harris signed a 2-year, $9 million extension with the Cleveland Browns in March 2024, following a strong performance in 2023. This deal included $3.99 million in guaranteed money.
Denver agreed to terms on a three-year deal with defensive lineman Shelby Harris in March 2021, valued at $27 million, including $15 million in guaranteed money. This agreement was made as Harris reflected on the importance of staying in Denver for his family, calling it 'home.'
Born on August 11, 1991, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Shelby Harris embarked on his collegiate football career at the University of Wisconsin. After redshirting his freshman year with the Badgers, he transferred to Illinois State, where he continued to develop his skills. In 2010, he earned a spot on the Missouri Valley Football Conference all-newcomer team. By 2012, Harris was a key player for the Redbirds, starting all thirteen games as the team advanced to the FCS national quarterfinals, and was recognized with an all-MVFC first-team selection. His college career concluded prior to the 2013 season following a dismissal from the team due to conduct issues.
Harris’s professional journey in the National Football League began when he was selected by the Oakland Raiders in the seventh round of the 2014 NFL Draft as the 235th overall pick. He signed with the Raiders in May 2014, experiencing initial transitions including being waived and re-signed to the practice squad and active roster multiple times during his two seasons with the team. After short stints with the New York Jets and Dallas Cowboys’ practice squads in 2016, Harris signed a reserve/future contract with the Denver Broncos in January 2017. It was with the Broncos that he found significant on-field success and stability, notably saving a game in September 2017 with a late-game blocked field goal against the Los Angeles Chargers. He recorded 5.5 sacks and 34 tackles in 2017, marking a productive year.
His tenure with the Denver Broncos also featured a career-first interception in November 2018 against Ben Roethlisberger, sealing an upset victory. In March 2021, Harris signed a three-year, $27 million contract extension with the Broncos, reflecting his increased value. A significant turning point in his career occurred in March 2022 when he was traded to the Seattle Seahawks as part of a multi-player and pick deal involving quarterback Russell Wilson. After starting 14 games for the Seahawks in 2022, securing 44 tackles and two sacks, he was released in March 2023. Subsequently, Harris signed with the Cleveland Browns in August 2023, where he has continued his career as a defensive tackle, playing in 17 games in 2023 with seven starts, and signing a one-year extension in March 2024.
