Shinji Kagawa was born in Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, on March 17, 1989. He started playing football at the age of five and joined Marino Football Club, followed by Kobe NK Football Club, and FC Miyagi Barcelona during his youth career. His talent was recognized early, leading to him signing a professional contract with Cerezo Osaka at 17, becoming the first player in Japan to do so before graduating high school, excluding those promoted from J.League youth teams. He played a pivotal role in Cerezo Osaka’s team, becoming the top scorer in J.League Division 2 in 2009. His performance during this period drew international attention, particularly for his role as a shadow striker and his partnership with Takashi Inui.
Kagawa’s career progressed significantly with a move to Borussia Dortmund in 2010 for a fee of €350,000. During his initial two-year stint, he contributed to Dortmund’s Bundesliga championship victories in the 2010–11 and 2011–12 seasons, and a DFB-Pokal win in 2011–12. His individual accolades included being named Bundesliga Player of the Hinrunde in 2010 and being part of the Bundesliga Team of the Season for two consecutive years. In 2012, he joined Manchester United, becoming the first Japanese player for the club. He achieved a Premier League title with Manchester United in the 2012–13 season and scored the first-ever Premier League hat-trick by an Asian player.
After two years at Manchester United, Kagawa returned to Borussia Dortmund in 2014, adding another DFB-Pokal title in the 2016–17 season. His career then saw him play for Beşiktaş in Turkey, Real Zaragoza in Spain, PAOK in Greece, and Sint-Truiden in Belgium. He holds the unusual distinction of being one of the few players to achieve multiple league titles across different European countries. Kagawa also had a distinguished international career with Japan, earning over 90 caps and scoring more than 30 goals. He was a key member of the Japan team that won the AFC Asian Cup in 2011 and participated in multiple FIFA World Cups and Confederations Cups. In 2023, he rejoined his boyhood club Cerezo Osaka, where he continues to compete.
