Simon Helberg

Simon Maxwell Helberg was born on December 9, 1980, in Los Angeles, California, to actor Sandy Helberg and casting director Harriet Helberg. Despite his parents’ professions, Helberg’s initial interest was karate. He later developed an interest in acting during his teenage years and pursued formal training at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, studying at the Atlantic Theater Company. His early career, beginning in 1999, involved guest roles and smaller parts, allowing him to establish himself as a character performer and sketch comedian. He also performed with comedian Derek Waters as part of the sketch comedy duo Derek & Simon, which led to a web series.

Helberg gained significant recognition for his role as Howard Wolowitz in the CBS sitcom “The Big Bang Theory,” which ran from 2007 to 2019. His portrayal of the character earned him a Critics’ Choice Television Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 2013. Beyond television, Helberg has appeared in various films, including “Old School” (2003), George Clooney’s “Good Night, and Good Luck” (2005), and “A Serious Man” (2009). He also demonstrated his versatility as a writer, director, and producer for projects such as “We’ll Never Have Paris” (2014).

In 2016, Helberg’s acting career reached another milestone with his performance as pianist Cosmé McMoon in the film “Florence Foster Jenkins,” starring alongside Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant. This role earned him a nomination for the Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor – Motion Picture. He further expanded his portfolio with the film “Annette” (2021) and has continued to work in television series like “Poker Face” (2023–2025) and “American Dad!” (2023–2024), showcasing his range across different genres.
