Simon Mignolet

Simon Mignolet cemented his status as a decorated goalkeeper by leading Sint-Truiden to win the Belgian Second Division in 2009, where he contributed 29 appearances and scored one penalty goal. After becoming first-choice goalkeeper in 2006 and helping the team avoid relegation, he was named Belgian Goalkeeper of the Year the following year. In June 2010, Mignolet transitioned to the English Premier League, signing a five-year contract with Sunderland for £2 million. He made an immediate impact, earning man of the match honors on his August 15, 2010 debut in a 2-2 draw against Birmingham City.

Over three years, he made 101 appearances for Sunderland, also earning the Sunderland Player of the Year title for the 2012–13 season. Mignolet’s exceptional form led to his transfer to Liverpool for £9 million on June 25, 2013. His official debut on August 17, 2013, saw him make a crucial late penalty save in a 1-0 win against Stoke City. He remained with Liverpool until August 2019, making 204 appearances and winning the UEFA Champions League in the 2018–19 season.

He also forged a significant international career, debuting for the Belgium national team in 2011. Earning over 30 caps, he was selected for Belgium’s FIFA World Cup squads in 2014, 2018, and 2022, alongside UEFA Euro 2016 and 2020 tournaments. In August 2019, Mignolet returned to Belgian football, signing a five-year contract with Club Brugge for £6.4 million. This move initiated a period of domestic dominance, as he played a key role in Club Brugge winning the Belgian Pro League titles in 2019–20, 2020–21, and 2021–22.

Looking ahead, Mignolet is set to compete for the Belgian Super Cup with Club Brugge in 2025, underscoring his enduring presence at the sport’s highest levels.
