Simon van Dorp

Simon van Dorp established himself as a formidable talent early in his rowing career, becoming a five-time Dutch junior National Champion. He further distinguished himself on the international junior circuit, earning a silver medal at the Junior World Championships in 2014 and securing a gold medal at the Junior World Championships in 2015. His success continued at the U23 level, where he clinched a gold medal at the World Rowing U23 Championships in 2016. Van Dorp then advanced to collegiate rowing at the University of Washington from 2017 to 2020, where he majored in political economy.

During his freshman year in 2017, he was a pivotal member of the Men’s Varsity 8+ crew that achieved multiple significant victories, including the Oregon State Classic, Stanford Invitational, Schoch Cup against the University of California, Berkeley, and the Windermere Cup. That year, the crew also won the Pac-12 Championships and placed second in the grand final at the Intercollegiate Rowing Association (IRA) Regatta. In 2018, van Dorp continued his exceptional performance as a sophomore, setting a world record for the 6k erg time with an impressive 18:13.2 (1:31/500m) on February 20. He was a key member of the UW Varsity 8+ that again won the Pac-12 Championships.

He also added another silver medal to his collection in the quadruple sculls at the 2023 Bled European Championships. Continuing his Olympic journey, van Dorp achieved a significant milestone by earning a bronze medal in the Men’s Single Sculls at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games, solidifying his status as a top individual sculler. Looking ahead, his competitive calendar includes further major events, such as the 2025 Plovdiv European Championships, where he is slated to compete in quadruple sculls after securing a silver medal in the event.
