American rapper, songwriter, narrator and record producer, Anthony L. Ray, who goes by the stage name Sir Mix-a-Lot, has been an integral part of the Hip-Hop music scene since the 1980s. He is best known for his 1992 No.1 Billboard Hot 100 hit song, Baby Got Back, which went on to win the 1993 Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance.
Ray has always had an ear and a passion for music and he started rhyming in the early 1980s. It was a music teacher at his school who introduced him to the possibility of pursuing music as a career. Soon after leaving education, Ray began DJing at local community centers, and it wasn’t long before he was throwing parties at the Rotary Boys and Girls Club in the Central District of Seattle. It was there that he met ‘Nasty’ Nes Rodriguez, a local radio DJ and host of the West Coast’s first rap radio show, Fresh Tracks, on Seattle’s KKFX. This led to the duo founding the Nastmix record label with businessman Ed Locke in 1983.
Ray has worked with many great institutions throughout his illustrious career, including the Seattle Symphony Orchestra, and has provided narration and commentary for documentaries, as well as hosting radio shows and making guest appearances on popular TV programmes. Aside from making music, Ray also has always had a passion for electronics and CB radio, and enjoys fixing keyboards and other musical equipment to this day. He is always active on social media connecting with his massive following via Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and Facebook.
