Sofia Polcanova was born on September 3, 1994, in Chișinău, Moldova. She began her table tennis career at a young age, representing Moldova at the World Championships when she was 13 years old. At 14, Polcanova moved to Linz, Austria, joining the Linz AG Froschberg club, and was granted Austrian citizenship in 2010. Her early career progression included significant international competition experience, laying the groundwork for her future achievements in the sport. Her consistent performance and dedication to table tennis allowed her to transition from junior competitor to a professional athlete representing Austria on the international stage.
Polcanova’s international breakthrough occurred at the 2014 European Championships in Lisbon, where she earned a silver medal with the Austrian team. The 2018 European Championships in Alicante marked a pivotal moment in her career, as she secured two silver medals, one in mixed doubles with Stefan Fegerl and another in women’s doubles, and also a bronze medal in the singles event. In 2019, she achieved the top position in the European rankings, a testament to her sustained high performance. Despite facing injuries in 2020 which temporarily impacted her career, Polcanova demonstrated resilience and commitment by making a successful return to competition. She married in the summer of 2020.
