Born on February 16, 2002, in Lessebo, Sweden, Truls Möregårdh is a professional table tennis player known for his right-handed shakehand grip style and unconventional techniques, including the chop block. His early talent was recognized when his family relocated to Eslöv at age 12 to support his table tennis career. Möregårdh quickly rose through the ranks, achieving initial international success in 2016. He became a two-time European student champion and a European youth champion. From 2017 to 2019, he secured two junior vice-world champion titles. In 2018, he participated in the Summer Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, reaching the quarter-finals in the individual competition and placing fourth with the team. He continued his progression into adult tournaments, earning a bronze medal at the 2018 World Team Table Tennis Championships and the 2019 European Table Tennis Championships. Later that year, he transferred from Eslövs AI BTK to TT Saitama in Japan.
Möregårdh’s career trajectory accelerated significantly from 2021 to 2024. In March 2021, he was ranked 103rd globally. A notable achievement was his “fairytale run” at the ITTF World Table Tennis Championships Finals in Houston, USA, later that year, where, as the 77th-ranked player, he became the lowest-rated to reach a men’s singles final, ultimately securing silver after a loss to Fan Zhendong. This success propelled him to a peak world ranking of third in October 2022. Despite a dip in his ranking to 20th in November 2023 and 26th heading into the Olympic Games Paris 2024, he regained momentum at the Olympics. There, he won two silver medals, one in men’s singles after defeating top-ranked Wang Chuqin and reaching the final against Fan Zhendong, and another with the Swedish men’s team.
Möregårdh’s performances in Paris 2024 were instrumental in reigniting public interest in table tennis in Sweden. He was named the Swedish people’s choice athlete of the year in 2024, triumphing over prominent athletes like Mondo Duplantis and Sarah Sjöström. This made him the first table tennis player to win the individual Jerringpriset prize. His popularity has led to widespread fan engagement, and Sweden is set to host the first-ever WTT Grand Smash in Europe in Malmö in 2025, with Möregårdh fronting the event. Swedish public television has also acquired the sport’s broadcasting rights until 2028, capitalizing on this renewed enthusiasm. Beyond his athletic achievements, Möregårdh co-authored a book with his father, Carl, titled “Tänk som Truls” (“Think like Truls”), offering insights into mental strength and table tennis techniques. He has also engaged in various off-court activities, including appearances at Tottenham Hotspur matches and a photoshoot for Cosmopolitan China, further solidifying his public profile.
