Sylvia Soska and Jen Soska, known collectively as The Soska Sisters, are twin sisters working together as directors, producers and screenwriters. They are best known for directing gory, shocking horror films such as American Mary, Dead Hooker in a Trunk, and See No Evil 2.
Born in Canada, the Soska sisters developed a love for horror films at an early age after watching the cult genre classic Poltergeist. They soon decided to work in the entertainment industry, initially attempting to make a name for themselves as actresses and taking on work as extras. Swiftly becoming dissatisfied with the roles they were offered, the pair attended film school and produced their debut feature, Dead Hooker in a Trunk, for their final project. Directed, written and produced by the sisters themselves, the film caused some controversy upon release, but gained a cult following among horror fans.
Following their debut film release, the pair directed American Mary, a story that deals with an underprivileged medical student who decides to perform underground surgeries to pay the bills. The picture won a plethora of awards after its release, including the Jury Special Award at Fantastic Fest, and awards in four separate categories at both Shudderfest and Toronto After Dark. Since then, the sisters have worked on several further films, and are currently co-writing and directing a reboot of the 1977 Cronenberg classic, Rabid.
