Spencer Charnas co-founded the band Ice Nine Kills in 2000, initially under the name Ice Nine, with high school friend Jeremy Schwartz. The band released a demo in 2002. They officially changed their name to Ice Nine Kills before releasing their debut independent album, “Last Chance to Make Amends,” on April 20, 2006. The following year, on November 20, 2007, they released their EP “The Burning” through Red Blue Records, which led to national tours, including opening for bands like I See Stars and Eyes Set to Kill. By 2008, Ice Nine Kills had opened for notable acts such as As I Lay Dying and Paramore, and performed on the Taste of Chaos 2009 tour. In mid-2009, with Schwartz’s departure, Charnas became the sole original member, significantly influencing the band’s shift towards an experimental metalcore sound.
Under Charnas’s leadership, Ice Nine Kills signed with Ferret Music in the spring of 2009. Their second full-length album, “Safe Is Just a Shadow,” was released on July 12, 2010. The band gained further recognition with their third studio album, “The Predator Becomes the Prey,” released on January 21, 2014, which marked their first entry into the Billboard Top 200 charts at No. 153. A pivotal moment came with their signing to Fearless Records in September 2015, followed by the release of “Every Trick in the Book” on December 4, 2015. This album generated prominent singles like “Bloodbath & Beyond” and “Communion of the Cursed.” Charnas continued to steer the band’s thematic direction, particularly with “The Silver Scream,” released on October 5, 2018, an album where each track was inspired by a horror film, achieving their highest chart debut and landing a top 10 spot on the Billboard Top Album Chart.
The band’s success continued with “The Silver Scream 2: Welcome to Horrorwood,” released on October 15, 2021, featuring singles such as “Hip to Be Scared” and “Assault & Batteries.” Spencer Charnas has expanded his creative endeavors beyond music, co-writing the script for the horror movie “The Slashin’ of the Christ” in April 2025. He also launched initiatives like the Silver Scream Convention and ventures in personal care and cosmetics with Pretty Evil. His collaboration with Matthew Lillard’s Macabre Spirits resulted in the “Horrorwood Reserve” whiskey, further cementing his brand in the horror and entertainment industries.
