The fabulous creative Shelton Jackson Lee, is better known the world over as Spike Lee. He is a director, producer, screenwriter, and actor, who has produced such modern-day classic movies as Do the Right Thing, Mo’ Better Blues, Malcolm X, and BlacKkKlansman. He has won numerous accolades for his incredible output, including an Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, as well as an Academy Honorary Award for his contributions to filmmaking.
Born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia, Lee, who was nicknamed Spike during his childhood, attended Morehouse College where he made his first student film. He then went to Clark Atlanta University, and then took a Master’s at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University. He began work on his first feature film, She’s Gotta Have It, in 1985, and when it was released a year later, it grossed over $7 million at the U.S. box-office and was widely regarded as a groundbreaking film for African-American filmmakers and a welcome change in the representation of blacks in American cinema. Lee when on to become one of the most regarded filmmakers in America, producing modern-day classics such as Do The Right Thing, Malcolm X, and the Oscar-winning BlacKkKlansman.
