Stellan Skarsgård was born in Gothenburg, Västra Götalands län, Sweden, on June 13, 1951. His early career began in his teens with the title role in the TV series “Bombi Bitt och jag” (1968). Between 1972 and 1988, he was employed at The Royal Dramatic Theatre in Stockholm, participating in notable stage productions such as August Strindberg’s “Ett drömspel” (1986) and “Vita rum” (1988). During this period, he also gained recognition for his film roles, including “The Simple-Minded Murderer” (1982), which earned him a Guldbagge and a Silver Berlin Bear, and “Noon Wine” (1985). He portrayed the Skagen-painter Sören Kröyer in “Hip hip hurra!” (1987) and the Swedish ambassador Raoul Wallenberg in “Good Evening, Mr. Wallenberg” (1990).

Skarsgård’s international career began with smaller roles in American films like “The Unbearable Lightness of Being” (1988) and “The Hunt for Red October” (1990). His significant breakthrough in English-language cinema came with Lars von Trier’s “Breaking the Waves” (1996). This led to several supporting roles in American films including “Good Will Hunting” (1997), Steven Spielberg’s “Amistad” (1997), and “Ronin” (1998). He became known for his collaborations with director Lars von Trier, appearing in six of his features including “Dancer in the Dark” (2000), “Dogville” (2003), and “Nymphomaniac” (2013). His filmography also includes commercial hits such as “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest” (2006) and “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” (2007) as Bootstrap Bill Turner, and the musical “Mamma Mia!” (2008).

In recent years, Skarsgård has taken on prominent roles in major franchises and acclaimed television series. He joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Dr. Erik Selvig, appearing in “Thor” (2011), “The Avengers” (2012), “Thor: The Dark World” (2013), “Avengers: Age of Ultron” (2015), and “Thor: Love and Thunder” (2022). He also played Baron Vladimir Harkonnen in Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” (2021) and “Dune: Part Two” (2024). On television, he received critical acclaim for his role as Boris Shcherbina in the HBO miniseries “Chernobyl” (2019), earning a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor. He further solidified his television presence as Luthen Rael in the “Star Wars” series “Andor” (2022–2025).
