Steph McGovern

Recognized early for her leadership potential in engineering, Steph McGovern received an Arkwright Engineering Scholarship in 1998 and was later named Young Engineer for Britain. Her pre-university professional experience included a significant contribution to Black+Decker’s Six Sigma team, where her work on improving production techniques for the Leaf Hog generated annual savings of £150,000 and earned her an EEF/Year in Industry Award. McGovern subsequently earned a BSc in science communication and policy from University College London in 2005. In 2013, Teesside University awarded her an honorary doctorate for her distinguished career.

McGovern’s broadcast career commenced at the BBC with work experience on the ‘Tomorrow’s World’ program, leading to a part-time researcher role in current affairs. She rapidly progressed, becoming the main producer for daily financial news on BBC Radio 4’s ‘Today’ programme, then lead producer of business news for BBC’s ‘One,’ ‘Six,’ and ‘Ten O’Clock’ news bulletins, working alongside Robert Peston. From 2011, she served as BBC Breakfast’s main business presenter, frequently co-hosting the entire program. Her extensive BBC tenure also encompassed presenting ‘Wake Up to Money’ and ‘On the Money’ for BBC Radio 5 Live, and ‘Pocket Money Pitch’ for CBBC.

She showcased her versatility as a contestant on ‘The Masked Dancer’ in 2022 and co-hosts ‘The Rest Is Money’ podcast alongside Robert Peston, demonstrating her ongoing engagement with financial journalism. 2024 saw McGovern expand her creative portfolio, taking on her first acting role in the BBC LGBTQ+ comedy ‘Smoggie Queens.’ Further solidifying her presence in entertainment and philanthropy, she was a finalist on Netflix’s ‘Celebrity Bear Hunt’ in 2025 and notably won £125,000 for charity on ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Celebrity Special’ in February 2025.
