Lauren Magiera, a Chicago native and alumna of the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA), has established a career in sports broadcasting marked by significant achievements and pioneering roles. After graduating from UAA in 2009, she began her career in Alaska, serving as the 10 o’clock sports anchor and later as sports director for the ABC affiliate KIMO. Her journey in Alaska continued as a sports anchor for the NBC affiliate KTUU, building a strong foundation in sports journalism in the region. These early roles provided her with comprehensive experience in various aspects of sports television production, including anchoring, hosting in studios, and covering events on-site.
Her career progressed with a notable move to the Green Bay Packers organization, where she became the first person to hold an in-house communications position for the team. This experience further broadened her understanding of sports media from an organizational perspective. In April 2016, Magiera returned to Chicago, joining WGN-TV as their first female sports anchor and reporter. Her tenure at WGN-TV was impactful, beginning serendipitously with the Chicago Cubs’ historic World Series win in 2016. She covered major events, including the Cubs’ World Series celebration, a trip to the White House, and various Chicago Bears events. Magiera also created, executive produced, wrote, and hosted “Destination Outdoors with Lauren Magiera,” an outdoor lifestyle program on WGN-TV, showcasing her versatility in content creation.
Magiera’s six-year contract with WGN News concluded in early 2022. During this period, she held the role of Weekend Anchor. Following her departure from WGN, she has taken the opportunity to reflect on her career path and the evolving landscape of news delivery, emphasizing her belief in the industry’s continuous innovation in storytelling. She often speaks about the transferability of skills learned as a student-athlete, such as endurance, strength, and teamwork, to her professional life. Magiera frequently highlights sports as a universal connector, fostering shared experiences of hardship and celebration among diverse fan bases.
