Stephan James, born on December 16, 1993, in Scarborough, Toronto, Ontario, Canada, is an actor with Jamaican heritage. He graduated from Jarvis Collegiate Institute in 2011. His foundational acting experiences include a recurring role on the Canadian teen series “Degrassi: The Next Generation” for two seasons. Early in his career, he also appeared in various television projects such as “How To Be Indie,” “Clue,” and “My Babysitter’s a Vampire” in 2011, followed by roles in “The Listener” and “The LA Complex” in 2012. These early roles provided him with a strong introduction to the industry.
James achieved his breakthrough with a major feature film role in “Home Again” (2012), earning a Canadian Screen Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor. His career gained further momentum with his role as civil rights activist John Lewis in Ava DuVernay’s acclaimed film “Selma” (2014), which received an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. In 2016, James took on the lead role of Olympic hero Jesse Owens in the biopic “Race,” a performance that earned him a Canadian Screen Award for Best Actor. He continued to portray significant characters, including Walter Cruz alongside Julia Roberts in the Amazon Prime series “Homecoming,” for which he secured a Golden Globe nomination in 2019. Further critically acclaimed work includes his role as Alonzo ‘Fonny’ Hunt in Barry Jenkins’ “If Beale Street Could Talk” (2018), a film recognized among the American Film Institute’s Top 10 Films of the Year.
Beyond his acting career, Stephan James is also a producer and a notable figure in philanthropic efforts. Alongside his brother, Shamier Anderson, he co-founded B.L.A.C.K. Canada (Building a Legacy in Acting, Cinema + Knowledge) in 2016, later expanding it to include The Black Academy in December 2020. This non-profit organization is dedicated to celebrating and supporting Black talent across Canada’s arts, culture, entertainment, and sports sectors. In 2021, James, with his brothers, launched the Bay Mills Diversity Fund, aiming to support BIPOC businesses in Canada, exemplifying his commitment to fostering diversity and opportunity within and beyond the entertainment industry.
