Stephen Maguire

Stephen Maguire was born on March 13, 1981, in Glasgow, Scotland. He began his professional snooker career in 1998 after winning the IBSF World Snooker Championship. Early in his career, he showed potential, notably defeating Stephen Lee in the first round of the 2002 UK Championship. His breakout came in 2004 when he won his first world ranking event, the European Open, where he defeated Jimmy White in the final. Later that year, he clinched the UK Championship, a Triple Crown event, by beating David Gray 10–1. This period marked his rise, and he reached a career-high world ranking of number two from 2008 to 2010.

Throughout his career, Maguire has accumulated significant achievements, including six ranking event titles and three minor-ranking event titles. A prolific break-builder, he has compiled over 500 century breaks and achieved three maximum breaks. His best World Championship performances include reaching the semi-finals in 2007 and 2012. In 2019, he secured the 6-Red World Championship for the second time and, in 2020, won the Tour Championship, ending a seven-year wait for a ranking title and earning a substantial prize. He continues to compete at a high level, demonstrating a resilient and competitive presence in professional snooker.

Maguire’s career has also seen notable rivalries, particularly with Shaun Murphy, stemming from an incident at the 2004 Grand Prix where Maguire was docked a frame. Off the table, he is married to Sharon and has three children. He is known for a distinctive playing style, sometimes competing without a bow tie due to a neck condition, which sets him apart from many of his peers.
