Stephen Thompson

Stephen Randall Thompson was born on February 11, 1983, in Simpsonville, South Carolina. He began martial arts training at age three under his father, Ray Thompson, a former professional kickboxer and owner of Upstate Karate. Thompson engaged in both kickboxing and karate competitions from the age of 15, holding black belt ranks in Tetsushin-ryū Kempo, American Kickboxing, and Jujutsu, and a brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. His amateur kickboxing career was undefeated, with 37 wins, 18 by knockout, and no losses, securing 16 titles including the IKF National Amateur Tournament Middleweight Champion in 2000 and the W.A.K.O World Championships Cruiserweight Champion in 2005. He turned professional in kickboxing in May 2004, maintaining an undefeated record through 20 matches before transitioning to mixed martial arts.

Thompson made his Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) debut in 2012, quickly showcasing his striking prowess with a Knockout of the Night performance at UFC 143. Throughout his UFC career, he accumulated multiple Performance of the Night and Fight of the Night bonuses. Key career achievements include a first-round technical knockout win over future UFC middleweight champion Robert Whittaker at UFC 170 in 2014, and a TKO victory over former champion Johny Hendricks at UFC Fight Night 82 in 2016. He challenged for the UFC Welterweight Championship twice against Tyron Woodley in 2016 and 2017 in highly contested bouts. Thompson’s polite demeanor has earned him a reputation as one of the most respectful fighters in the UFC.
