Steve Froggatt

Stephen Junior Froggatt was born on March 9, 1973, in Lincoln, Lincolnshire, England. His football journey began early when he was poached from Leicester by youth team coach Dave Richardson to join Aston Villa as a trainee. Froggatt turned professional with Aston Villa in 1991, making his senior debut and quickly establishing himself during the inaugural Premier League season of 1992–93. During this period, he made 21 appearances, scoring his first goal against Crystal Palace, and contributed to Aston Villa’s runner-up finish in the league. He also gained international recognition, earning two caps for the England U21 team between 1992 and 1993, and was part of the Aston Villa squad that won the League Cup in 1994.

In July 1994, Froggatt was transferred to Wolverhampton Wanderers for a fee of £1 million, reuniting with manager Graham Taylor who had previously signed him for Aston Villa. Over four seasons at Molineux, Froggatt made 111 appearances, playing a key role as the club made two unsuccessful bids for promotion through the play-offs. His performances led to a move to Coventry City in October 1998 for £1.9 million. At Coventry, he became a first-choice player, and his form culminated in a surprise call-up to Kevin Keegan’s England national team squad in November 1999, more than six years after his last U21 appearance. He was an unused substitute in a Euro 2000 qualifying playoff match against Scotland and was part of the squad for other international fixtures.

Froggatt’s playing career was cut short by a severe ankle injury sustained in February 2000 during a Premier League fixture against Sunderland, following a tackle by Nicky Summerbee. Despite attempts to recover through surgery and spending the 2000–01 season on the sidelines, he was forced to announce his retirement at the end of that season. Post-retirement, Froggatt served as the press officer for Coventry City. He currently works as a personal trainer and frequently appears as a football summariser on television and BBC Radio Five Live, sharing his insights and experiences from a decade-long professional career that spanned 190 total club appearances and 11 goals.
