About

Stephen John Lyons was born on June 3, 1960, in Tacoma, Washington. His early years were shaped by his father’s love for baseball, encouraging Steve to play multiple sports. He attended Marist Catholic High School in Eugene and later Beaverton High School, where he focused on baseball. Lyons attended Oregon State University on a partial baseball scholarship, excelling in fielding and earning two Gold Gloves as an outfielder and a third baseman. In 1981, after his junior year, he was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the first round (19th overall), marking the beginning of his professional baseball career.

Lyons embarked on his professional career playing for various teams in Boston’s farm system, including the Winston-Salem Red Sox (1981), Bristol Red Sox (1982), New Britain Red Sox (1983), and Pawtucket Red Sox (1984). He made his Major League debut with the Boston Red Sox on April 15, 1985, as a pinch runner. During his initial stint with the Red Sox, he played 133 games in 1985, batting .264 with five home runs and 30 RBIs. His versatility allowed him to play multiple positions, leading to the nickname “Psycho.” On June 29, 1986, Lyons was traded to the Chicago White Sox, where he continued to demonstrate his multi-positional abilities, even playing all nine defensive positions in a single exhibition game in 1990. He also made his major league pitching debut in 1990. Lyons had a total of four stints with the Boston Red Sox throughout his career, returning in 1991, 1992, and 1993.

After retiring as a player, Lyons transitioned to a broadcasting career, serving as a color analyst for Fox Sports’ MLB coverage starting in 1996. He also spent time as a color analyst for the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2005 to 2013 and later joined the New England Sports Network (NESN) as a studio analyst and occasional game analyst for the Boston Red Sox in 2014. His career has been marked by both memorable plays and controversial on-air comments, which have led to brief suspensions and dismissals from broadcasting roles. Lyons authored two books, “PSYCHOanalysis” (1995) and “The Psycho 100: Baseball’s Most Outrageous Moments” (2009), providing his insights into the game.
