In 1976, he furthered his academic credentials with a PGCE. His early career included a stint as a sales manager for Cavenham Foods and briefly as a teacher. Ridgway then transitioned into business, working with Ted Toleman, a builder of power boats, in Miami. During his two years as Business Development Manager at the Toleman Group, he gained experience in the marine industry, even serving as Chief Pilot for the Virgin Atlantic Challenger, a boat built by Cougar Marine, where he worked from 1981 to 1985.
