Sushmita Sen

Sushmita Sen was born on November 19, 1975, in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, India. Her early education included attending the Air Force Golden Jubilee Institute and Air Force Silver School in Delhi, following her father Shubeer Sen’s career as an Indian Air Force Wing Commander. Initially, she faced challenges with English, mastering it by the age of 16 and subsequently pursuing English Honors and a degree in Journalism. Her public career began at 15 with an appearance at the Air Force Club Contest, leading to various fashion shows. In 1994, Sen participated in the Miss India beauty pageant, where she was crowned Miss India, ahead of Aishwarya Rai. Later that year, she became the first Indian woman to win the Miss Universe title.

Her acting career commenced in 1996 with the Bollywood film ‘Dastak’. While the film did not achieve significant commercial success, it marked her entry into the Hindi film industry. In 1999, she gained wider recognition with her role as Rupali Walia in David Dhawan’s comedy ‘Biwi No.1’, which earned her a Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress. The same year, she received another Filmfare nomination for her performance in the romantic drama ‘Sirf Tum’. She continued to appear in several films, including ‘Aankhen’ (2002), ‘Main Hoon Na’ (2004), and ‘Maine Pyaar Kyun Kiya?’ (2005), which were commercially successful and further solidified her position in the industry.

After a period of career fluctuations and a hiatus, Sen made a significant return to acting in 2020 with the web series ‘Aarya’ on Disney+ Hotstar, where she played a mafia queen. This role garnered critical acclaim and earned her a Filmfare OTT Award for Best Actor in a Drama Series – Female. In 2023, she portrayed transgender activist Shreegauri Sawant in the miniseries ‘Taali’, further showcasing her ability to take on challenging roles. Her career demonstrates a consistent commitment to her craft and an evolution from beauty queen to acclaimed actress.
