Dalip Singh Rana, known professionally as The Great Khali, was born on August 27, 1972, in Dhiraina, Himachal Pradesh, India. Growing up in a financially challenged family, he undertook various jobs to support his siblings. His notable height, resulting from acromegaly, contributed to his distinctive presence. Rana’s path to professional wrestling began when a Punjab Police officer, impressed by his physique, recruited him into the police force in 1993, fostering his athletic development.
He commenced his professional wrestling career in October 2000 under the ring name Giant Singh, competing with All Pro Wrestling (APW) in the United States. His early career also included brief engagements with World Championship Wrestling (WCW) and New Japan Pro-Wrestling (NJPW). In NJPW, he formed a tag team known as Club 7 with Giant Silva, making their debut at the Tokyo Dome in 2001. Rana continued to wrestle internationally in promotions such as Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL) in Mexico and All Japan Pro Wrestling (AJPW) until 2006.
His career significantly advanced on January 2, 2006, when he signed with World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE), becoming the first Indian professional wrestler to do so. In WWE, he achieved significant milestones, including winning the World Heavyweight Championship in 2007. He was involved in high-profile rivalries with prominent figures like The Undertaker, John Cena, Batista, and Triple H, and participated in major events such as WrestleMania and SummerSlam. Beyond wrestling, Rana expanded into acting, appearing in films such as “The Longest Yard” (2005) and “Get Smart” (2008), and was the runner-up on “Bigg Boss 4” in 2011. In 2015, he founded Continental Wrestling Entertainment (CWE) in Jalandhar, Punjab, a promotion and training academy for aspiring wrestlers. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2021, marking a significant recognition of his contributions to professional wrestling.
