A master of the five-wicket haul, Tim Southee is a New Zealand cricketer who has represented his country in all formats of the game. He was one of the country’s youngest cricketers, making his debut at the age of 19 in February 2008. Southee was the third New Zealand bowler to take 300 Test wickets. He got five wickets and scored 77 off 40 balls in the second innings of his Test debut against England. In the Plunket Shield, Ford Trophy, and Super Smash, Southee represents Northern Districts, as well as Northland in the Hawke Cup. In place of Kane Williamson, who was rested for the first T20I against West Indies, he was named captain of New Zealand. That match was won by New Zealand by 47 runs.
Southee is recognised for his ability to induce late outswing at a brisk tempo. He took the third most wickets in the 2011 ICC World Cup (18 wickets at 17.33). He also had a strong showing at the 2015 ICC World Cup, taking seven wickets in a round-robin league match against England. The cricket magazine Wisden dubbed this spell the ODI spell of the decade.
In international cricket, Southee has 15 five-wicket hauls. In Tests, his best batting average is 7/64, which he achieved against India in Bangalore in 2012. The 7/33 he took against England during the 2015 Cricket World Cup is his best ODI figure. In a T20I, his best numbers are 5/18 against Pakistan in 2010. In October 2019, Kane Williamson was ruled out of T20I series against England due to a hip injury, and Southee was named as captain.
