Born on December 19, 1987, in Lyon, France, Karim Mostafa Benzema began his football journey at age eight with local club Bron Terraillon. After impressing Lyon scouts at a youth match, he joined the Olympique Lyonnais academy in 1997. Benzema quickly rose through the youth ranks, notably scoring 38 goals at the under-16 level, and was promoted to the reserve team ahead of the 2004–05 season. He made his senior debut for Lyon in January 2005 and signed his first professional contract shortly after. Benzema became a key player for Lyon, contributing to three Ligue 1 title wins and earning the league’s Player of the Year award in 2008 after finishing as the top goalscorer and helping the club secure its first Coupe de France title.
In 2009, Benzema moved to Real Madrid in a significant transfer deal. After an initial period of adjustment, he established himself as a consistent goalscorer, forming a highly effective attacking trio alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale, known as “BBC.” This period saw Real Madrid achieve considerable success, including four UEFA Champions League titles between 2014 and 2018. Following Ronaldo’s departure in 2018, Benzema stepped into a more central attacking role, becoming the team’s primary goal scorer. His exceptional performances in the subsequent seasons led to multiple individual accolades, including the La Liga Best Player award and the Pichichi Trophy in 2022, and his fifth Champions League title.
Benzema’s career is marked by his evolution from a promising youth talent to one of the most respected strikers in world football. He won the UEFA Player of the Year and the prestigious Ballon d’Or in 2022, becoming only the fifth French player to receive the honor. In 2023, he transitioned to Al-Ittihad in the Saudi Pro League, where he quickly assumed the captaincy. In his first full season with Al-Ittihad, he captained the club to the 2024–25 Saudi Pro League title and a domestic double, while also being named the league’s Player of the Season. His career goal tally surpassed 500 in 2025, further cementing his legacy as a prolific scorer.
