Toby Greene, born on September 25, 1993, in Melbourne, began his football journey playing junior football for Ashburton Redbacks and attending Wesley College. His talent was evident early on, leading him to be selected with the 11th overall pick in the 2011 AFL Draft by the Greater Western Sydney Giants, making him an inaugural GIANT. Greene debuted in the Giants’ first season in 2012, showcasing his abilities as a prolific ball-winner. In his debut year, he earned the Giants’ best first-year player award and was runner-up for the Kevin Sheedy Medal. He was also nominated for the AFL Rising Star award in 2012. Over the years, Greene developed a reputation as one of the league’s most lethal forwards with an innate goal sense and an ability to perform in crucial moments.
Greene’s career has been marked by significant professional achievements. In 2016, he received his first All-Australian selection as a half-forward flank and won his first Kevin Sheedy Medal as the club’s best and fairest player. He continued to lead the team in scoring, becoming the GWS leading goalkicker in 2017, tying with teammates Jonathan Patton and Jeremy Cameron. The 2020 AFL season saw him enhance his reputation as a match-winner, critical in key victories for the Giants. In 2021, he was again named an All-Australian and was the GWS leading goalkicker.
His leadership capabilities were formally recognized when he was named co-captain of the Giants in 2022, alongside Stephen Coniglio and Josh Kelly. By 2023, Greene was appointed the sole captain by coach Adam Kingsley. This added responsibility coincided with a career-best season for Greene, where he kicked 66 goals and led the Giants to a preliminary final. His performance in 2023 earned him numerous accolades, including his third All-Australian selection, where he was named captain of the team, and his second Kevin Sheedy Medal. In 2024, he continued his strong performance with 44 majors, maintaining his status as one of the league’s most dangerous mid-sized forwards. Throughout his career, Greene has displayed strong commitment to his team, exemplified by his fiercely loyal approach to the sport both on and off the field.
