Toby Morse was born on April 8, 1970, in Taunton, Massachusetts. He is the youngest of three siblings. When Morse was three years old, his father died, and his mother worked multiple jobs to support the family. He spent his early life in Newport, Rhode Island, and St. Mary’s County, Maryland. Around age twelve, Morse’s siblings introduced him to skateboarding and punk music, taking him to shows for bands like Descendents and The F.U.’s. Observing the effects of drug and alcohol use on others at parties influenced his decision to claim a straight edge lifestyle by age thirteen, inspired by Minor Threat’s song “Straight Edge.” He graduated from Great Mills High School in 1988.
In 1988, Morse moved to New York City to engage with the hardcore punk scene. He lived with members of Gorilla Biscuits and contributed backing vocals to their album, Start Today. The following year, Morse began working as a roadie for bands such as Gorilla Biscuits, Killing Time, and Sick of It All, a role he maintained for several years. During soundchecks and shows, he would often perform “My Love is Real” with the bands. In December 1994, Morse, along with Rusty Pistachio and Eric Rice, formed H2O, which quickly became part of the New York hardcore scene. In 2004, he co-founded Hazen Street with David Kennedy, featuring Freddy Cricien of Madball as a co-vocalist.
Morse launched a clothing line, Straight Edge OG (SXEOG), in 2006. In 2009, he established the non-profit organization “One Life, One Chance” (OLOC), aimed at inspiring young people to make healthy choices and avoid peer pressure. This initiative originated after a teacher friend invited him to speak at a school, where his message resonated positively with students. OLOC’s mission is to encourage a Positive Mental Attitude (PMA) and self-acceptance. Contributors to OLOC have included notable figures such as Travis Barker, CM Punk, and Moby. Morse continues to tour with H2O, host the “One Life One Chance” podcast, and advocate for a plant-based, drug and alcohol-free lifestyle.
