United States Jim Leonhard has transitioned from a distinguished NFL safety to a prominent defensive coordinator and coach, now contributing his expertise to the Denver Broncos.
Jim Leonhard enters his second season with the Denver Broncos and first as defensive pass game coordinator/assistant head coach in 2025.
In 2009, Leonhard signed with the New York Jets, reuniting him with former Ravens defensive coordinator and later New York Jets head coach, Rex Ryan. Terms were $6 million for 3 years with $1 million guaranteed.
Born on October 27, 1982, in Tony, Wisconsin, Jim Leonhard commenced his football journey at Flambeau High School, excelling as both a quarterback and strong safety. His high school career included a state championship in 1997 and recognition as a two-time first-team All-State performer. Demonstrating dedication, Leonhard joined the University of Wisconsin as a walk-on, ultimately playing in 51 games and tying the program record with 21 interceptions. His collegiate success also saw him break the Big Ten record for career punt return yards with 1,347 yards, earning him three first-team All-America and first-team All-Big Ten accolades from 2002-2004. He was inducted into the Wisconsin Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015.
Following his collegiate career, Leonhard carved out a decade-long professional playing career in the NFL as a safety. He played for several teams, including the Buffalo Bills (2005-07, 2013), Baltimore Ravens (2008), New York Jets (2009-11), Denver Broncos (2012), and Cleveland Browns (2014). Across 142 games, including 73 starts, Leonhard recorded 396 tackles, 4.5 sacks, and 14 interceptions. Notable playing years include his 2008 season with the Baltimore Ravens, where he started 13 games and recorded 68 tackles, and his 2009 season with the New York Jets, where he started all 16 games. His professional career concluded after the 2014 season.
Leonhard transitioned into coaching in 2016, returning to his alma mater, the University of Wisconsin, as a defensive backs coach. His rapid ascent saw him named defensive coordinator in 2017, a role he held until 2022. During his tenure as defensive coordinator, Wisconsin’s defense consistently ranked among the nation’s best, leading to him being a Broyles Award finalist in 2017. He also served as the Badgers’ interim head coach for seven games in 2022, achieving a 4-3 record. In 2023, he served as a senior football analyst at the University of Illinois before joining the Denver Broncos in 2024 as the defensive pass game coordinator/assistant head coach, demonstrating continued career progression and impact.
