Cotter, was a World War II navy veteran and neurosurgeon, and his mother, Barbara Cotter, managed his father’s medical office. Cotter attended Moses Brown School in Providence and later Denison University for his undergraduate degree. He began his stand-up comedy career in 1987, quickly gaining recognition in the Boston comedy scene.
