About

Tom Joyner was born in Tuskegee, Alabama, on November 23, 1949. He came from a family with a strong educational background; his grandfather was a physician, and both his parents were HBCU graduates. Joyner himself attended Tuskegee Institute, now Tuskegee University, graduating with a degree in sociology. Early in his career, he initially pursued music, joining a band that included Lionel Richie, but later transitioned into radio.

Joyner began his broadcasting career in Montgomery, Alabama, after college. He worked at various radio stations across the South and Midwest, including cities like Dallas, Memphis, St. Louis, and Chicago. In Chicago, he worked at WVON, WBMX-FM, and WJPC (AM), where he gained national television exposure as the first host of the syndicated series *Ebony/Jet Celebrity Showcase*. A significant turning point in his career came in 1985 when he began commuting daily between Dallas and Chicago, hosting morning and afternoon shows simultaneously for eight years. This unique arrangement earned him the nicknames “The Fly Jock” and “The Hardest Working Man in Radio,” as he reportedly accumulated seven million frequent flyer miles during this period.

In 1994, Joyner signed with ABC Radio Networks to host *The Tom Joyner Morning Show*, a nationally syndicated program. This show became highly successful, featuring news, sports, comedy, celebrity guests, and R&B music. He founded Reach Media Inc. to manage the show and other ventures, including BlackAmericaWeb.com. Joyner also established The Tom Joyner Foundation, which has raised over $65 million to support HBCUs through scholarships and various programs, including the annual Fantastic Voyage cruise. He officially retired from his morning show on December 13, 2019, after a distinguished career marked by media innovation and philanthropy.
