Tom Nicholls

Tom Nicholls was born on March 4, 1992, in Yarrawonga, Victoria, to a Fijian mother and an Australian father. He attended St Bede’s College and St Kevin’s College in Melbourne, playing junior football for the Cheltenham Junior Football Club before moving to the Sandringham Dragons in the TAC Cup for the 2009 season. Following this, Nicholls was recruited by the newly formed Gold Coast Football Club, known as GC17 at the time, to compete in the VFL for the 2010 season. He officially debuted in the Australian Football League (AFL) in Round 8 of the 2011 AFL season against Adelaide at 19 years and 71 days old. A knee injury temporarily sidelined him for the remainder of the 2011 season.

Nicholls’ career progression saw a significant turning point in 2013 when he was nominated for the AFL Rising Star award in Round 16 and was also selected as the ruckman for the inaugural 22under22 team by the AFL Players’ Association. This period marked a peak in his playing career, during which he focused on becoming the best athlete possible. Over his tenure with the Gold Coast Suns, Nicholls played 45 games, contributing to 15 wins, 1 draw, and 29 losses. He compiled 175 kicks, 103 marks, 380 handballs, and 555 disposals, along with seven goals and five behinds. He also recorded 997 hit-outs, 204 tackles, and 163 clearances.

After 2016, Nicholls experienced a period where he played fewer senior games and faced further injuries, which led him to question his football future. During this time, he dedicated himself to mentoring younger players, finding satisfaction in their development both on and off the field. In 2019, Nicholls retired from professional football to pursue a career in investment banking. He utilized his Bachelor of Commerce degree to transition into a role with Henslow and later with PJT Partners. His career illustrates a successful pivot from professional sports into a demanding corporate environment, leveraging skills such as resilience and strategic thinking developed during his playing days.
