Tommy Shaw is a key member of the band Styx, which is represented by Red Light Management. Styx draws from over four decades of chart hits, singalongs, and deep cuts, showcasing Shaw's continuous involvement and impact on the band's enduring success.
Tommy Roland Shaw, born on September 11, 1953, in Montgomery, Alabama, developed his musical talents early, performing with various local bands. His career gained significant momentum when he joined MSFunk, a Chicago-managed group, which eventually led to his audition for Styx. In December 1975, Shaw officially became a member of Styx, marking a pivotal moment in his career. His songwriting prowess quickly became evident with tracks such as “Crystal Ball” (1976), “Mademoiselle,” and “Shooz” on his debut album with the band. Shaw’s efforts were crucial in the band’s breakthrough with “The Grand Illusion” (1977), an album that achieved platinum status and featured his hit “Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man).” His rock-oriented compositions, “Renegade” and “Blue Collar Man,” from Styx’s eighth album, “Pieces of Eight,” further solidified his role as a key contributor, becoming major hits and concert staples. Throughout his career with Styx, Shaw maintained a prominent role in both songwriting and vocal performances, navigating the band’s evolving musical direction.
During the 1980s, amidst internal tensions regarding Styx’s musical path, Shaw pursued a solo career, releasing three albums: “Girls with Guns” (1984), “What If” (1985), and “Ambition” (1987). His debut solo album spawned a Top 30 hit with the title track and minor successes like “Lonely School.” By the early 1990s, Shaw co-founded Damn Yankees with Ted Nugent, Jack Blades, and Michael Cartellone, achieving a platinum-selling debut album and a major hit with “High Enough,” which he co-wrote. He later formed the duo Shaw Blades with Jack Blades, releasing “Hallucination” in 1995 and “Influence” in 2007. Shaw’s reunion with Styx in 1995 led to continued touring and album releases, including “Brave New World,” “Cyclorama,” and “Big Bang Theory.” He has also collaborated with other notable artists, contributing to tribute albums for Pink Floyd, Kiss, and Queen.
Shaw’s diverse musical journey includes a bluegrass album, “The Great Divide,” released in 2011, and collaborations on Don Felder’s “Road to Forever.” He has performed with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra and the Contemporary Youth Orchestra, showcasing his versatility across genres. His enduring career was recognized with an induction into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame on February 22, 2008.
