Anthony Wayne Stewart, born on May 20, 1971, in Columbus, Indiana, began his racing career at a young age, winning a World Karting Association championship in 1987. His early career saw him progress through the United Midget Racing Association (UMRA) and the United States Auto Club (USAC) series, where he quickly demonstrated exceptional talent. In 1995, Stewart made history by becoming the first driver to win USAC’s Triple Crown, securing championships in the National Midget, Sprint, and Silver Crown divisions. This early success laid the foundation for a career marked by achievements across diverse racing formats.
Stewart transitioned to IndyCar racing with Team Menard in 1996, eventually winning the Indy Racing League title in the 1996-97 season. Concurrently, he entered NASCAR, making his Busch Series debut in 1996 and subsequently moving to the Cup Series in 1999 with Joe Gibbs Racing. His rookie NASCAR season was notable, with three wins and a fourth-place finish in points, earning him the Winston Cup Rookie of the Year award. Over his 17-year NASCAR Cup Series career, Stewart accumulated 49 wins and three championships (2002, 2005, 2011), becoming the only driver to win titles under both the Chase and non-Chase formats. He also achieved a significant milestone by completing the Indianapolis 500 – Coca-Cola 600 ‘Double Duty’ in 2001, finishing sixth and third respectively.
In 2009, Stewart became a co-owner of Stewart–Haas Racing, a pivotal move that saw him win the 2011 Cup Series championship as an owner-driver, a feat not achieved since Alan Kulwicki in 1992. Under his leadership, Stewart–Haas Racing secured another Cup Series championship in 2014 with Kevin Harvick, and the team accumulated 51 wins, including the 2017 Daytona 500. Stewart’s impact extends beyond driving, as he also owns Tony Stewart Racing, which has achieved multiple USAC and World of Outlaws titles, and has invested in various motorsports venues and series, demonstrating a comprehensive involvement in the sport.
