Torry Jabar Holt was born on June 5, 1976, in Greensboro, North Carolina. He distinguished himself early in his football career, playing for Eastern Guilford High School where he caught 129 passes for 2,573 yards and 42 touchdowns. He further developed his skills at Hargrave Military Academy before attending North Carolina State University. At NC State, Holt became a standout wide receiver for the Wolfpack football team from 1995 to 1998. In his senior year, he received consensus All-American honors and was named Atlantic Coast Conference Offensive Player of the Year, setting ACC records at the time with 88 receptions for 1,604 yards and an NC State record of 16 touchdown receptions. His collegiate achievements led to his number, 81, being retired by NC State in 1999.
Holt was selected by the St. Louis Rams as the sixth overall pick in the 1999 NFL Draft. He quickly made an impact, contributing to the Rams’ Super Bowl XXXIV victory in his rookie season, where he recorded 52 receptions for 788 yards and six touchdowns. He became a key member of the Rams’ “Greatest Show on Turf” offense. From 2000 to 2005, Holt achieved a league record of six consecutive seasons with at least 1,300 receiving yards, a testament to his consistent performance. He earned seven Pro Bowl selections (2000, 2001, 2003-2007) and was a First-team All-Pro in 2003, also leading the NFL in receptions that year. By October 2006, he became one of the fastest players in NFL history to reach 10,000 and 11,000 receiving yards.
After a successful decade with the St. Louis Rams, he signed with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2009 for one season, recording 51 catches. Due to a knee injury requiring surgery, he later signed a one-year contract with the New England Patriots in 2010 but was placed on injured reserve shortly after. Holt officially retired from the NFL in 2012, signing a ceremonial contract with the St. Louis Rams. He concluded his career ranked tenth in league history in receiving yards and thirteenth in receptions at the time of his retirement. Following his playing career, Holt transitioned into broadcasting, serving as an analyst for Fox Sports and NFL Network, including a role on ‘NFL Total Access’. He also co-owns Holt Brothers, Inc. with his brother Terrence Holt, and began coaching as an assistant football and wide receivers coach at Heritage High School in 2015.
