In a sport where margins are measured in seconds and centimeters, Uta Abe has changed what dominance looks like in women’s judo. Competing in the half-lightweight (52 kg) division for Japan, she has built a record that places her among the most accomplished judoka of her generation, blending technical precision with a competitive edge that has defined the weight class for years.
Her breakthrough on the world stage came in 2018, when she took gold at the World Judo Championships in her weight category. She defended that title in 2019, then reclaimed it again in 2022, 2023, and 2025 — five world championships in total, a run of sustained excellence few athletes in any sport ever match.
The Olympic stage confirmed her standing. At the 2020 Summer Olympics, Abe won gold in the Women’s 52 kg competition, the pinnacle of her division. She followed that with silver medals in the judo mixed team event alongside the Japanese squad at both the 2020 and 2024 Games, anchoring Japan’s team campaigns across two Olympic cycles.
Now a two-time Olympic medalist and five-time world champion, Abe represents the peak of Japanese judo — a competitor whose consistency at the highest level has made her one of the defining figures of her era in the sport.
