Vashti Cunningham was born on January 18, 1998, in Las Vegas, Nevada. She began her high jump career at Bishop Gorman High School, showing early promise in the sport. In April 2015, Cunningham achieved a national high school record at the Mt. SAC Relays, clearing 1.94 meters (6 ft 4¼ in). This mark also ranked as the No. 4 world Youth mark and the No. 3 mark globally for 2015 at that time. Throughout her junior career, Cunningham continued to excel, culminating in a 1.96-meter (6 ft 5 in) jump at the 2015 Pan American Junior Athletics Championships, which tied the World Youth Best. Her early achievements quickly established her as a significant talent in high jump.
Cunningham turned professional in March 2016, signing with Nike. Shortly after, she won the 2016 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships with a jump of 1.99 meters (6 ft 6¼ in), setting a new World Junior Record. This performance led to her victory at the 2016 World Indoor Championship. She has since consistently competed at elite levels, securing a silver medal at the 2018 World Indoor Championships and a bronze medal at the 2019 World Championships in Doha, where she cleared 2.00 meters. Cunningham has represented the United States in multiple Olympic Games, finishing 13th in Rio 2016, 6th in Tokyo 2020, and 5th in Paris 2024. She holds multiple U.S. national titles, including her 13th U.S. high jump title in 2023, and has achieved a personal best of 2.02 meters (6 ft 7½ in) outdoors in 2021.
