About

Vera Ann Farmiga was born on August 6, 1973, in Clifton, New Jersey, to Ukrainian parents. She grew up in an insular Ukrainian-American community and did not speak English until she began kindergarten at age six. Farmiga graduated from Hunterdon Central Regional High School in 1991 and later pursued acting, graduating from Syracuse University’s School of Performing Arts in 1995. Her professional career began with stage work, including a Broadway debut as an understudy in “Taking Sides” in 1996.

Farmiga gained early television experience in projects such as the adventure series “Roar” (1997) and the crime drama “Law & Order” (1998). Her film career began with supporting roles in films like “Return to Paradise” (1998) and “Autumn in New York” (2000). A significant turning point came with her breakthrough role as an addicted mother in the independent drama “Down to the Bone” (2004), for which she received Best Actress awards at the Sundance Film Festival and from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. She continued to build her filmography with notable performances in “The Manchurian Candidate” (2004) and Martin Scorsese’s “The Departed” (2006).

Her career further ascended with an Academy Award nomination for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for “Up in the Air” (2009). Farmiga made her directorial debut with “Higher Ground” (2011), in which she also starred. On television, she achieved critical acclaim and an Emmy nomination for her portrayal of Norma Louise Bates in “Bates Motel” (2013-2017). She also became recognized as a “scream queen” for her role as Lorraine Warren in “The Conjuring” films, starting in 2013, and received another Emmy nomination for her work in “When They See Us” (2019). Most recently, she featured in “Hawkeye” (2021) and “Five Days at Memorial” (2022).
